Encaustic is a centuries old method of painting with molten beeswax or wax along with varnish and a dry oil pigment resulting in luscious, vibrant colors. In these workshops we explore various encaustic techniques including layering, fusing, incising, scraping, combining oil sticks with encaustic, combining encaustic and collage. Safety precautions will be discussed as well as the history of encaustics. I teach workshops regularly at Riley Street Art Supply in Santa Rosa, California and out of my studio, northeast of Santa Rosa. The classes are geared toward the beginner and I supply all the equipment. I encourage students to bring their own collage materials if they wish to incorporate objects into their piece. This will make their piece more personal. I bring a box of collage materials for each class to which the students are welcome. I find it most effective to have a small number of students in each workshop and limit them to 4 – 6 students.
