| My encaustic work is a
result of experimenting in a variety of media over the years. I have
incorporated my oil painting experience, as well as sculpture, textiles and
drawing into my encaustics. I love color, from the most dramatic cadmium red to
the softest of naples yellow. In addition to color, I enjoy focusing on the
surface of the wax, creating interesting textures. While working, I focus on the
present rather than the end result. I have no preconceived ideas when I approach
a bare surface. I often hold a thought in my head, "more shall be revealed" as I
work on a piece which enables me to keep pushing. The process of removing
materials is as integral as is adding. Some of my best works are the result of
not having a specific image in mind but, rather, applying brush to surface and
working until whatever it is I am looking for reveals itself. Encaustic is a
wonderful process; a challenge I welcome. Catherine McCauley October, 2007
